The 'Barn Door' Effect

We’ve been busy behind the scenes over the last few months putting together all the pieces of the The Open Gym puzzle! We’ve had a blast so far and wanted to share some of the things we’ve been up to.

Recently we headed out to the Lock Climbing wall in Harlow to film our first Bouldering video. We were in the capable hands of our friend Ned who is a seasoned climber and qualified instructor. Quite frankly we were blown away by his exceptional knowledge and passion for climbing!

Early on Ned introduced us to a game called, ‘Add On’ which involved taking turns to create a climbing route adding one extra hold at a time. What started simple, quickly evolved into quite a technical route! During this game we learned about the, ‘Barn Door’ effect which refers to what happens when you don’t keep your weight above your feet. Some of us learned this lesson the hard way!

Once we had developed a bit of confidence we headed downstairs to a much larger climbing room with full on ropes and harnesses! In here we had a chance to do a higher climb and also see Ned in action. Everyone we met was super friendly ending up with quite the crowd gathered round to watch one of the climbers take the Go Pro up the wall to film Ned.

As the lights came down we left feeling thoroughly inspired. The vibe was spot on and we even got some leads for new videos - I believe 3D twister was mentioned at one point?!

We met some fantastic people and had a great experience. Our videos are a celebration of everywhere we go and everyone we meet! Maybe we’ll see you in our next video?

Keep moving,
The Open Gym team
